A substitute teacher and assistant football coach at Montgomery Blair High School, just north of Washington, was charged Friday with sex abuse of a minor after allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old Blair student, officials said.

The suspect, Cory Boatman, 27, had sex with the girl at his apartment on several occasions in August, according to police accounts filed in Montgomery County.

Investigators built their case after speaking with the student, who said Boatman had served as a mentor, and after looking at text messages Boatman had sent her, according to the records.

Among texts sent by Boatman, according to police: “I just enjoy sex with you almost too much.”

And: “Can I bring you back to the crib?”

Boatman, who lives in Wheaton, texted the student during the summer and during the current school year while he was employed by the school system, the documents said.

School district officials said Boatman started as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County in 2014 and worked mostly at Montgomery Blair. On his final day of work, he taught at Northwood High School, said school district spokeswoman Gboyinde Onijala.

Boatman was involved in Blair athletics for much of the time he was teaching, first as a volunteer basketball and football coach. In August, he was hired as assistant football coach.

Boatman was placed on leave Sept. 25, which school officials said was immediately after allegations were made to the school.

In a letter sent home to families Friday, Principal Renay Johnson said the school system has cooperated with authorities in the case and considers student safety its priority.

“These charges are deeply concerning and unacceptable,” she wrote. “This type of behavior does not reflect the principles of [Montgomery County Public Schools] or our community, and it will not be tolerated.”

Johnson said school counselors and other staff members would provide support to students.

It was not clear Friday whether Boatman had a lawyer, and no one could be reached at the phone number for Boatman listed in court documents.

Police and school officials said anyone with information about the case or about Boatman can call detectives at 240-773-5400.
